Writer: The Tasting RoomThe Tasting Room

With over 50 wines and 50 whiskeys on the shelves of our Downtown Syracuse Restaurant, we have the pleasure of sharing exquisite wines & whiskeys from all across the world with our customers. Since our selection is so curated and unique, we always encourage our patrons to step away from their “go-to” wines and whiskeys and instead try something new. But knowing where to start can be tricky — especially if you’ve always been a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc drinker or an Irish Whiskey sipper. That’s why we’re here to introduce you to some wonderful wines and whiskeys that you may not come across everyday.

This wine & whiskey Wednesday, let’s start with Bordeaux Blanc — also known as White Bordeaux.

Typically, when people hear the word Bordeaux, their mind jumps to a hearty, aged red — oftentimes a bottle that can be on the pricier end. But the French Bordeaux region has much more to offer than just those beautiful reds. In fact, this region excels in whites, ranging from dry to sweet.

The most common technique for a Bordeaux Blanc is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc with Sémillon. Working aside one another, the Sémillon adds body to round out Sauvignon Blanc’s tart acidity and herbal notes. This creates a white that can really range in versatility, but is refreshing nonetheless.

The owner of The Tasting Room, Nicole, is a bit of a Francophile herself, having lived and studied fashion design in Paris for a year. She’s a huge fan of French wines, enjoying their old world style and delicate complexities. Here are her thoughts on Bordeaux Blanc:

I was never a fan of Sauvignon blancs, especially the classic New Zealand style. Then I discovered the softness found in Bordeaux Blancs. That powerful citrus punch is softened and the French create a beautifully balanced, fresh wine that’s great for sipping or pairing with seafood.”

Want to try Bordeaux Blanc for yourself? Lucky for you we currently have two different choices on our shelves:

-Chateau de Cruzeau Pessac-Leognan Blanc

-Pierre Angulaire Bordeaux Blanc.

Both are made with 100% Sauvignon grapes. If you’re a Sauvignon lover, looking to try something new, we highly recommend giving these Bordeaux’s a try. And even if Sauvignon isn’t your go-to, anyone who enjoys a well-balanced white will enjoy this style wine.
